Marian Wolbers | Writing
& Editing
A former writer and editor at Time-Life Books (Tokyo office) and Rodale Press,
Marian Frances Wolbers has published books and articles on health, science, history,
fashion, social studies and other subjects with various publishing companies.
She is the co-author of Allentown: A Pictorial History (Donning, Norfolk,
VA, 1984)which has undergone three printings, and is author of Burundi,
from the Places and Peoples of the World series (Chelsea House, NY, 1987). She
wrote three books for Time-Life–Insects, Underwater Life,
and Plants–as part of the Children's Treasury of Knowledge series,
translated in 17 languages. Her work at Rodale included serving as rewrite editor
for The Practical Encyclopedia of Natural Healing (over two million copies
sold), author of several chapters in The Women's Encyclopedia of Natural Healing,
update editor for Prevention's Encyclopedia of Common Diseases, and writer/editor
or copy editor for over 20 other titles. Her recipes have been published in Rodale's
Soups and Salads, as well as Vegetarian Times. While serving as Academic
Publications Coordinator at UNC-Charlotte, she overhauled the University Catalog
and Faculty Handbook, making both publications stylistically consistent
and bringing them up to date; she also produced 32 department brochures for UNCC.
Wolbers' articles have appeared in newspapers and numerous magazines, including
Prevention, Vegetarian Times, Healthy Woman, Fitness Swimmer, Heart & Soul,
Healthy You, Berks County Living, and JAL (Japan Air Lines) Magazine,
among others. Men's Confidential newsletter has published several of her
articles; some of these appear under the pseudonym Arthur Henning. In 1995 she
served as senior editor for Rodale's workbook for human resource managers entitled
Work Life, Personal Life: Your Guide to Becoming a People-Responsive Company
and later participated in seminars presenting that publication to corporations.
Formerly a senior editor in Rodale's Health Promotions Division, Wolbers performed
duties as a creative projects director, helping to develop and produce a 15,000-article-strong
electronic health product called Rodale's Online Health, (www.onlinehealth.com)
as well as newsletters on health, fitness and mind-body wellness (Body
Bulletin, At Your Best, and Safety Check newsletters). She was executive
editor of Rodale's Swimmer, a national magazine, and started www.swimmeronline.com
in 2000-2001 (Glenn Hughes, web designer). In
2001-2002, Wolbers served as managing editor to launch The Rodale Institute's
online magazine for children at www.
kidsregen.org (Glenn Hughes, web designer),
promoting "Healthy Soil, Healthy Food, Healthy People." Her business
articles have appeared in Berks Is Our Business newsletters (Berks Chamber
of Commerce, PA) and the Reading Business Inc. newspaper.
In 2004-05, Wolbers served as primary consulting editor and copy editor for
a special magazine project produced on a quarterly basis by the UNC-Chapel Hill
School of Public Health. The publication, called BEAUTY magazine, was created
as part of a study project to promote breast cancer awareness in African-American
women, and was disseminated in black-owned beauty salons in North Carolina. (Note:
African-American women in North Carolina have one of the highest cancer mortality
rates in the nation.)
Currently, she is co-author/editor for Dr. Daneil O'Neill's manuscript-in-progress,
tentatively titled After Knee Surgery: An Essential Guide to Recovering from
Knee Surgery.
